French TV channel Canal+ publishes its innovative tvOS app MyCanal
Since its launch in the 1980’s, France’s first ever premium TV channel, Canal+, could only be received through its iconic set-top box. Even when it launched its satellite TV offering CanalSat in the 1990’s, Canal+ stuck with its set-top box strategy. Even though now the set-top box is still used, the media group decided to switch sides and make their programming accessible without it, in order to stop the subscriber bleed towards the competition. Its new Apple TV application, MyCanal, shows this policy shift.
Quick and simplified navigation
The MyCanal app is reminiscent of the French service offering “Molotov TV” which was launched last summer exclusively for the Apple TV. The “Live TV” tab allows the user to visualize the live programming of all Canal+ channels. Every show has its own image and description with a progress bar, and changing channels is instantaneous. On some channels, the user can rewind the current program and replay any of the shows of the day. Live content is sorted by genre – movies, sports, TV series, youth programming… – and individualised suggestions are offered to the user.
A sport-watching experience developed for the Apple TV
To distance itself from the competition, Canal+ invests heavily in its sport content. “Multiplex TV” is MyCanal’s shiny new feature: the app allows to simultaneously watch 2 to 4 channels. Multiplex will be available from 9 March only on Apple TV.
New features are awaited for May 2017. “Expert mode” will display rich smart information in relation to the show that is being watched. The user will be able to view the Ligue 1 French football league’s ranking in real time, other matches’ results, the make-up of the teams and more statistics. This mode will also be available during Formula 1 Grand Prix broadcasts, with access to multiple viewpoints, first-person pilot camera, pilot statistics and rankings.
The MyCanal app will also allow for video notifications: in case of a goal in another sports match, a notification will appear; it will be possible to view the sports match while continuing to watch the current content.
Universal search with Siri
The MyCanal application is integrated with Siri. The user can ask “I want to watch the last episode of Versailles” or “I want to watch Canal+ Sport” and the desired program launches.
