Apple is testing a new Apple TV with 4K support
2017 could mean the arrival of a new Apple TV. According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently testing a new model, codename J105. It would come with newer, more powerful components, in order to support 4K content. The current Apple TV only supports resolutions up to 1080p.
4K could be a selling point, knowing that 4K TV sales are increasing. Moreover, Apple’s Chief Financial Officer, Luca Maestri, recently admitted that Apple TV sales dropped last trimester compared to the same period in 2015. The firm eMarketer also recently announced (link in French) that the Apple TV’s market share dropped to 11.9% in January from 12.5% in September.
Bloomberg added that Apple had multiple initial plans for the Apple TV, but they were never implemented. One of them consisted of shipping a gaming controller with the device. Apple finally dropped the plan. Another abandoned project was implementing a coaxial connector in order to connect a cable and see TV channels.
The new Apple TV with 4K support should be released this year, but no release date or additional precision have been shared yet by Apple.
